A BentBox Communities Story

A match made on the beach.

How MalibuStrings — the bikini brand whose customers turned a swimwear label into a global lifestyle — chose BentBox to build the next chapter of their community, with compliance, craft, and creator monetisation woven in from the first line of code.

Some collaborations begin in a boardroom. This one began with a shared instinct — the kind that two parties recognise in each other before either has finished a sentence. When the team behind MalibuStrings sat down with us at BentBox earlier this year, the conversation didn't open with feature lists or roadmaps. It opened with a quieter question: how do you keep a real community feeling like a community, in a world that keeps moving the goalposts?

MalibuStrings has spent years cultivating something rare. Their customers don't simply wear the brand — they document it, travel with it, photograph each other in it on every shoreline they can find. Many of them are wife-and-husband creative duos who've turned a swimwear purchase into a shared art project. The community had become a destination of its own: a meeting place for bikini lovers, photographers, partners and adventurers who treat self-confidence as a kind of practice.

For a long time, that gathering lived on a generic, off-the-shelf social platform. It worked, until it didn't.

I · The briefThe world moved. The platform didn't.

The recent wave of age verification legislation, paired with the tightening of 18 U.S.C. § 2257 record-keeping requirements, rewrote the rules under everyone's feet. Compliance, once a checkbox bolted on at the end, now has to be designed into a platform from its first schema. The tools MalibuStrings had outgrown weren't built for that — not because they were careless, but because they were built for everyone, which is a polite way of saying they were built for no-one in particular.

What the brand needed was a home that took the people in their community as seriously as the regulators did. Somewhere with the warmth of a private club and the discipline of an enterprise platform.

We needed a home that was built for people like us — and built for the world we actually live in now.

II · The conversation

The right introduction, at exactly the right time.

BentBox has been part of the bikini community since 2015 — long before "creator economy" entered the lexicon. We'd spent a decade giving photographers, models and brands a place to share their work and earn from their fans. So when we reached out to the MalibuStrings owner about BentBox Communities, our newest product, the timing was almost too neat. He'd been quietly looking for a way forward. We'd been quietly building one.

The clincher had already been solved months earlier. BentBox had integrated ProntoID, a Swiss identity verification partner, into every corner of the platform: age and identity checks, model release forms, the documentation trail required for full 2257 compliance. Across the board, on every piece of content. For MalibuStrings, the most expensive problem in their migration was off the table before the meeting started.

III · The buildA studio that ships.

Here is where we permit ourselves a small note of pride, because the team genuinely earned it. BentBox isn't a marketing operation that hired a few engineers. We are the inverse: a software studio — people who came up through enterprise systems, distributed infrastructure, payments — who decided to build a creator platform because we could see what the industry was missing. That DNA shows up in every decision we make: in how the infrastructure scales, in how features ship, in how quickly a brand's wishlist becomes a working product.

MalibuStrings arrived with a clear vision and a tighter timeline. They wanted to preserve everything that made their existing community special, and to add the things their members had quietly been asking for. Our team got to work. The result — a complete, branded community running on its own subdomain at malibustrings.bentbox.co — was delivered in a fraction of the time the equivalent build would have taken elsewhere. Compliance, baked in. Performance, dialled in. Their priorities, kept at the top of ours.

The reason that's possible isn't magic. It's that we don't subcontract our own platform. The people designing BentBox Communities are the same people who write the code, the same people who answer an email at eleven at night when something needs adjusting, the same people who'll be there in six months when the brand wants to add something new. Continuity, in this work, is a feature.

The messenger deserves a longer look. It isn't only chat — it's a small, polite commerce engine. Members can send tips inside a conversation, unlock content the other person has put up for sale, and keep everything inside one private space. The creator monetises. The fan gets closer access. The platform, where it can, gets out of the way.

V · The pointThe people make the place.

Communities live or die on their members, not their feature lists. What is striking about MalibuStrings is who arrives every day: women who wear these bikinis with a kind of confidence you cannot manufacture, often photographed by partners who've turned their love into a creative practice. They travel. They post. They cheer one another on. They turn beaches and pools into editorial sets and treat self-expression as the celebration it ought to be.

Building a safe, well-run home for that energy is the part of this work we find most satisfying. Not the architecture diagrams. Not the deploy pipelines. The fact that real people now have a better place to gather, to post, and to create real value around a brand they already loved.

VII · A note for brands

If you've built a community, we can build it a home.

MalibuStrings is the first. It won't be the last. If you have a real audience and want a place that feels like yours rather than a tenancy in someone else's app, we'd love to talk.
